Mrs. Mathai is an active recitalist. Recent appearances include performances at The Church of the Ascension and St. John's Episcopal (both in Montgomery), as well as the Cathedral of St. John the Divine in New York City. An advocate for new music at the organ, Mrs. Mathai has commissioned and premiered several works, including pieces by Aris Antoniades, Jonathan Posthuma, and Sarah Rimkus.
For over ten years, Mrs. Mathai has taught private piano, voice, and organ lessons at the Murphy Piano Studio (now Mathai Piano Studio). Under her coaching, several students won spots at both the Mark Twain School for the Gifted and Talented and Laguardia High School of Music and Art and Performing Arts in New York City.
Also active as a conductor, Mrs. Mathai attended the conducting institute at the Mostly Modern Festival, and has conducted performances with the American Modern Ensemble and Manhattan School of Music’s Lab Chorus. Until 2021 she taught as Assistant Director at the New York City Children’s Chorus.
Mrs. Mathai holds a BMus in piano performance from Westminster Choir College where she studied organ with Ken Cowan, and a MMus in organ performance from the Manhattan School of Music where she studied with Kent Tritle. She also studied at the Longwood Organ Festival with Alan Morrison and Peter Conte, and the Oregon Bach Festival with Paul Jacobs.
Mrs. Mathai is wife to Jacob Mathai, and mother to Selah and Josephine.
